Caesar Salad

When Jeremy, Sarah, and I made dinner for their parents, we made a side dish of Caesar Salad…homemade!! Totally from scratch.

Caesar Salad has always been a favorite of mine, and when my family visited my grandparents at their home in Arizona maybe 5 or 6 summers ago my grandma showed me how to make my own homemade Caesar Salad.  I was sooo impressed that it actually tasted just like Caesar…because looking at the ingredient list can be a little intimidating.

There is a secret ingredient that I had to tell the kids about before making the dish because honestly…it can make or break someone’s opinion of the dish.  Most people just don’t want to know it’s in there, but even picky Jeremy was ok with it!

My grandma made me sure to know how important it is to use a wooden bowl when making this dish, however, we did not have a wooden bowl and it still tasted amazing :)

Grandma’s Caesar Salad

Ingredients:

  • 1 clove garlic
  • 5-8 strips of anchovy and some oil (the secret ingredient)
  • 1 yolk from soft boiled egg
  • juice from half lemon (1-1.5 Tbsp lemon juice)
  • splash of worchestershire sauce
  • 2-3 Tbsp olive oil
  • Romaine lettuce
  • croutons (we made homemade!)
  • parmesan
Combine garlic, anchovy, yolk, lemon juice, worchestershire, and olive oil in a large bowl until it resembles smooth salad dressing.  Chop and clean the romaine lettuce and put in the bowl with the dressing.
Top with croutons and parmesan, then toss all together until combined.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  Enjoy!!
**This salad is also great topped with grilled salmon.  You can also make it into a black and blue type salad by adding steak, blue cheese instead of parmesan, and tomatoes (you can use salmon instead of steak too!).  The black and blue salad is one of Brenna, my sister’s, favorites!
